Leica Factory and Store Wetzlar

LEITZ PARK – 2016

I was fortunate enough to visit the new Leica Camera AG headquarters complex at the Leitz Park in Wetzlar, Germany earlier this year. The architecture is fascinating as it is based on the Leica lenses design. Standing outside the main entrance it is clear to see the circular lens design and the window ridges that resemble the manual focus grip of a classic Leica Summicron lens.

As you enter there is a gallery on the left, which exhibits many legendary Leica photographers. Next there is a museum narrating the evolution of the Leica 35mm rangefinder systems. Finally on the right is a Leica store, which will cause a distraction to any photographer, as long as they do not look at the prices.

The most intriguing part of my visit was the factory tour. The clinical bright white spaces and airtight facilities create a heavenly space for manufacturing cameras, lenses and binoculars. Please note you may need to wear shades!

After the tour I borrowed a Leixca X camera and took some exterior pictures of the headquarters before heading into Wetzlar. I have added below a selection of the images I took. A modern Leica camera may still have to wait, however the photographic history that is linked with the company will always keep me intrigued and fascinated.
