Panasonic GH4 Stills

Stills from video

Recently, I had an opportunity to take the Panasonic Lumix GH4 on a brief photo-walk around the historical market town of Dursley in Gloustershire. I concentrated on shooting short video clips, lasting around ten seconds, to test the new 4K video systems. I wanted to look at the quality of a still frame from the video clips and decipher whether a still of the video would be good enough to print?

The answer was a little subjective, as it depends on what your comparing the images to, for example the images where never going to compete with my Canon 5D. However, the approach of pulling a good quality still from a video file does open up a different approach, mainly because you are selecting a still from a period of time instead of trying to capture the perfect exact moment. For my test I mainly filmed reflections from shop windows and when I reviewed the footage I tried to pick the still that captured the most information.

As Bill Brandt once said, “Photography is not a sport therefore there are no rules” Experimenting is essential and this approach is fun and very easy to achieve with the Panasonic GH4. However selecting a still from a long clip could become a bit tiresome.
