I tried out a Fuji X-E1 camera with a 18-55mm lens, as I am looking for a credible alternative to my Canon 5D MkIII, for the days when it’s size and weight are not practical. My first impressions were good, the Fuji X-E1 is relatively intuitive and I was set up and ready to go in a couple of minutes. My aim was to photograph different views of Bath and to see if they would be as interesting as the more famous landmarks that are usually documented.
After an hour or trawling the streets where famous writers pass and present have perused, I was done. I have selected a couple of images to show the results that I have obtained with the Fuji X-E1. The camera was at times a bit slow to focus and the viewfinder is more of a guide. However, the overall performed was very good and I have listed the main advantages for me:-
- The camera is light and portable
- Images where crisp
- Effective and accurate metering
- Dynamic contrast
- Ease of use
- Large sensor for detail (APS-C)
To sum up, the Fuji X-E1 is almost an affordable substitute to a Leica M (Pound for Pound) and at 1/10th of the price you cannot go wrong.
