Ai Weiwei

Ai Weiwei is a visionary, a philosopher and a spokesperson for human rights issues. His art creates awareness and poses questions which communicate clearly across many cultures.I would not count myself as an art historian or even profess to be an expert on such a vast subject matter, but Ai Weiwei’s exhibition at the Royal Academy Of Arts last year was one of the most poignant I have seen. The challenging themes covered by Ai Weiwei’s work focused on various political views and situations in China. This work left me contemplating the comparrisons of western and Chinese culture.

I was fascinated by Ai Weiwei strength of character and this was notably highlighted by his detailed prison room installations, reconstructing his time incarcerated in 2011.  As a human rights activist Ai Weiwei reminds and nudges us of what goes on behind closed doors, the censorship, the difficulties voicing views and the political repression that exists. Ai Weiwei work is a strong visual voice that cannot be ignored.
